I’m thrilled to announce MasterVoices’ 2018-2019 season. Our three productions represent another year of musical storytelling at its most dynamic, most immediate, and most human. From a sweeping oratorio on exile and longing to a romantic celebration of spring to a dazzling concert production of a 1940s Broadway treasure, each of these one-of-a-kind choral events brings the traditions and triumphs of the past spectacularly into the here and now.
In this fall’s multimedia interpretation of Handel’s classic Israel in Egypt, Syrian-Armenian visual artist Kevork Mourad brings a modern and deeply personal perspective to the biblical Exodus story. Our jubilant spring tribute to a lost musical art form, Night Songs and Love Waltzes, unites three 19th century masters with the contemporary music they inspired, including a newly commissioned piece by Ricky Ian Gordon. And finally, our sumptuously staged concert presentation of Weill, Hart and Gershwin’s Lady in the Dark will reintroduce the world to the innovation and splendor of an all-but-forgotten theatrical masterpiece.
We at MasterVoices remain committed to keeping history’s most profound music alive for today’s audiences. But more than that, we want to actively engage with the works we perform, enriching them with a diverse range of creative perspectives and imbuing them with new resonance. This season our commitment to the art of musical storytelling is in full swing with works that illuminate the human condition across cultures, continents, and centuries. From the re-imagining of a biblical tale to the revival of a lost tradition and the remounting of a spectacular cult classic, our 130-voice chorus and world class soloists will be bringing to life the power of the human imagination at its most dynamic and most immediate. In collaboration with composers, librettists, visual artists, fashion designers and choreographers, we aim to create a new culture around choral concerts that remains true to the art form while opening the door to new audiences.
