When’s the last time you heard a group of talented nurses sing together?
Or heard a Dr. Seuss song in gospel harmony?
Or heard 120 voices live and on stage together?
Which is why we can’t wait to make A JOYFUL NOISE at Carnegie Hall! Meet some of the artists who will be singing for you on December 6th…
How They Got Started: They first gathered virtually in 2020, to support a nonprofit called Nurse Heroes. They didn’t know each other before joining voices – they came from different hospitals and nursing specialties – but the power of music lifted their spirits and helped them forge a special bond.
Where You Might Have Heard Them: In June 2021 on America’s Got Talent! They received the Golden Buzzer and ultimately advanced through multiple rounds, snagging a coveted Top 10 spot in the show’s Finale. You can catch them online too, helping to raise funds for CARE and other humanitarian groups.
How We Discovered Them: One of our board members had heard them sing, and so had a few MV staff. From there we figured out a connection, got in touch, and invited them to join us!
Past MasterVoices Projects: None! Welcome to the fam, NHNC!
Their JOYFUL NOISE: Lean On Me, You Will Be Found
How She Got Started: A graduate of The Juilliard School, Mikaela starred in the Encores! Production of The Golden Apple in 2018 and in 2019 was awarded a prestigious Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. Previous winners include Christopher Wheeldon and Julia Bullock!
Where You Might Have Heard Her: She most recently appeared as a featured soloist in Daniel Fish’s concert conception of The Most Happy Fella at Bard SummerScape; other notable performances include Cinderella at the MUNY, Maria in Chicago Lyric’s West Side Story, and Acquanetta in Michael Gordon’s eponymous opera at the 2018 Prototype Festival.
How We Discovered Her: Artistic Director Ted Sperling first heard her in a concert with ACO and also in The Golden Apple at City Center. Blown away by her voice and artistry, he introduced himself and asked her to be a part of “Our America” program. The rest is history!
Past MasterVoices Projects: Our America (2018), Israel in Egypt (2018), Let ‘Em Eat Cake (2019)
Her JOYFUL NOISE: Migratory V, Chichester Psalms, Let the Bright Seraphim and more!
How They Got Started: In a campus bathroom in Hunstville, Alabama! Rumor has it they were rehearsing as a quartet to prepare for a performance in 1980 when future member Mark Kibble heard and joined them, soon inviting a sixth singer. Some members graduated and new ones came on board; in 1987 they signed with Warner Alliance and officially took the name Take 6.
Where You Might Have Heard Them: On one of their TEN Grammy Award-winning albums, on the soundtracks to Do the Right Thing and Dick Tracy (among others), or on Quincy Jones’ Back on the Block album. They also appeared on Sesame Street in 1991… singing the alphabet!
How We Discovered Them: Artistic Director Ted Sperling was a long-time admirer of the group, ever since their debut album in 1988. Then when MYTHS AND HYMNS came along, he knew it was a perfect fit.
Past MasterVoices Projects: Myths and Hymns, Chapters I and IV (2021)
Their JOYFUL NOISE: You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch, Winter Wonderland, and more!
